中国貴州省南東部で毎年3月に開催されるサマ祭は、母系社会を起源とするトン族にとって、一年で最も重要かつ最も古い祭りの一つです。サマはトン族の言葉で「母系の祖先」を意味します。伝説によると、彼女は勇敢で好戦的なヒロインであり、トン族の共通の祖先の化身とみなされ、村の平和と繁栄、豊作を守ることができると言われています。
The Sama Festival in March every year in southeast Guizhou, China is one of the most important and oldest festivals of the Dong people. It originated from the matriarchal society. Sama means "matrilineal ancestor" in the Dong language. In mythology, she is a brave and warlike female hero. She is regarded as the incarnation of the common ancestor of the Dong people and can protect the peace, auspiciousness and good harvest of the village.
トン族の文化では、わらは悪霊を祓い、幸運をもたらす意味がある。祭祀の際にわらで作った龍が舞うのは村を清めるためであり、足に履くわらじには「不運を踏みつける」という比喩も込められている。
In the culture of the Dong people, straw has the meaning of exorcising evil spirits and bringing good fortune. In the ceremony of offering sacrifices to Sama, the dancing straw dragon means purifying the village, and the straw sandals worn on the feet also contain the metaphor of "trampling bad luck".
祭りでサマに供えられるもち米もわらで包まれており、これは保護用の殻のようなもので、清潔さと縁起の良さの象徴です。供犠の後は皆で一緒にもち米を食べ、わらを通してサマの祝福が部族の人々に伝えられます。
The glutinous rice offered to Sama during the festival must also be wrapped in straw, which is like a protective shell and a symbol of cleanliness and auspiciousness. After the sacrifice, everyone will eat glutinous rice together, and Sama's blessings can be passed on to the tribe through the straw.
典型的な稲作民族であるトン族にとって、水田と米は生存の基盤である。したがって、供物に多くの藁の要素が現れるということは、収穫に対する感謝であるだけでなく、土地と神々とつながる最も単純な形での自然への回帰でもある。それは、トン族が古代から信じてきたように、すべての物には魂があり、自然から取られ、最終的には自然に戻るということである。
As a typical rice-growing ethnic group, the Dong people regard rice fields and rice as the basis of survival. Therefore, the appearance of numerous straw elements in sacrifices is not only a thank you for the harvest, but also a return to nature in the simplest form, connecting with the land and gods, just as the Dong people have believed since ancient times: all things have spirits, they are taken from nature and will eventually return to nature.
