Yang Xianming, 78, is a Dong architect in the village. His home is at the foot of the drum tower in the center of the village. On the day of the visit, the rain had just stopped, and Yang was sitting in front of the stilt wooden building weaving straw sandals.

He started learning carpentry at the age of 22 and presided over the construction of Dong houses. To this day, many buildings in the village are designed and presided over by Yang. "We have an old saying, called the old people protect the village, and the ancient trees protect the village," Yang said, "Seeing the prosperity of the village, I am happy to build houses for them."

After the autumn harvest, collect the rice straw stalks, soak them, dry them, and then twist them into straw ropes of uniform thickness. When weaving, fix the toe of the shoe on one side of the rake, start the bottom, shape it, pierce the ears, and then trim it carefully, and a pair of straw sandals is ready.
楊さんは子供の頃、畑仕事に行く前や学校に行く前にわらじを履かなければならなかったので、村の老人たちは皆わらじを履いていました。しかし、今ではそれを身に着ける人は少なくなり、この技術を学ぶ人もほとんどいなくなりました。今では人々は革靴や布靴を履いていますが、トン族の人々は自然への敬意を表し、先祖を偲ぶため、祭りの際には今でも藁の衣服や藁靴を履いています。
When Yang was a child, he had to wear straw sandals to work in the fields before going to school, so the old people in the village all wore straw sandals. But nowadays, fewer people wear them, and few people learn this craft. Although people now wear leather shoes and cloth shoes, the Dong people still wear straw clothes and straw sandals during festivals to express their respect for nature and commemorate their ancestors.
